This is the fresher version of a question we get constantly — distinct from the non-IT career-switch version, because the starting point and the obstacles are different. If you are a final-year student or a recent graduate with a degree but no professional experience, here is the honest path.
Your actual advantage, and your actual obstacle
You are not competing against experience — nobody expects a fresher to have any. You are competing against every other fresher with the same degree and the same absence of experience, on a stack of resumes that mostly look identical to an automated filter. The entire game is differentiation, and a certificate alone does not differentiate you.
The realistic timeline
Four months in a full stack, Data Analyst or AI course, then one to three months of active interviewing for someone who completes the capstone project and engages with mock interviews consistently. Longer if you start applying before the project is genuinely finished — an unfinished portfolio project is worse than no project, because it invites a question you cannot answer well.
The three mistakes that stall freshers longest
- Applying before the project is done. A half-built project generates interview questions you are not ready to answer, and a bad first impression at a company is hard to recover from months later.
- Treating the certificate as the deliverable. Interviewers ask about the certificate for about ten seconds. They ask about the project for the rest of the round.
- Skipping mock interviews because the material feels understood. Understanding a concept and narrating it clearly under pressure to a stranger are different skills, and the second one is the one that actually gets tested.
Which track, as a fresher specifically
Java Full Stack has the widest hiring volume for freshers in Chennai, driven by the large services firms. MERN and Python Full Stack open more product-company doors and tend to produce a more visually convincing portfolio piece. Data Analyst is the shortest track (three months) and a genuinely strong fresher option if you are comfortable with numbers and communication over pure coding. See our full stack comparison piece for the longer version of this decision.
What to do in your final semester, if you have one
Start now rather than after your final exams. Running the course alongside your last semester, rather than waiting to start until after graduation, is the single biggest lever freshers have over the timeline — it means you can be interview-ready within weeks of graduating rather than starting the four-month clock only once you are already done with college.
